Description
Presenters: Kenneth Yip, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Department of Cell & Systems Biology Scott Schwartz, Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Department of Statistical Sciences Kenneth Yip and Scott Schwartz will share their experiences developing generative AI chat tools for large undergraduate courses. Prof. Yip will discuss the tools created for BIO130 and BIO230, first and second-year cellular and molecular biology courses, which were trained on previous course lectures to assist students and provide informal formative assessments. Over the past 1.5 years, these optional tools have been used by several thousand students. Prof. Schwartz will discussion the implementation and reception of AI chatbots in his STA130 "Introduction to Statistical Reasoning and Data Science" course, which serves approximately 500 students annually, and report on their positive benefit for "leveling playing field" regarding student success relative to non-prerequisite "prior coding experience". Underscoring both presentations will be an emphasis on student feedback and pedagogical impact.
